Taigh Cèilidh - Cèilidh House

Fiona J MacKenzie won the coveted gold medal when the Mod was held in Stornoway in 2005. Performing with her are Skipinnish, one of Scotland’s top cèilidh bands, whose mixture of west coast inspired dance music and songs has captivated audiences across the world. They will be joined this evening by a group of young musicians from locally based Fèis Rois.

Skipinnish are one of the best Cèilidh bands in Scotland, and their distinctive west coast style means that they are in demand the world over. They are joined by two legends of Gaelic song, Iain MacKay and Ishbel MacAskill, who likewise have performed across the globe. The programme is completed with a mix of songs and tunes from the 2008 Fèis Rois Cèilidh Trail crew.

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham are true legends of the world traditional music scene. Over the years they have delighted audiences with their music and stories right across the world. As well as highly successful recordings, their numerous television and radio appearances make Phil and Aly one of the best known duos in Scotland. They are joined by singer Maeve MacKinnon, current holder of the Scots Trad music awards “Up and Coming Artist” title. She recently released her debut album “Don’t Sing Love Songs” to critical acclaim and will be accompanied by talented guitarist, Innes Watson.

Tulloch Castle Dingwall has become synonymous with top quality piping and tonight’s concert is no exception, featuring the talents of Dr Angus, Allan and Iain MacDonald. Chasing the Sun by James Ross

The Blas Festival is proud to present this new commission by Wick born musician and composer, James Ross. This follows on from a successful “New Voices” commission at Celtic Connections and debut CD in 2006. The commission will feature new music, reflecting the Highland landscape throughout the course of a year, supported by stunning photography by Catriona Murray. James will be joined by the superb string quartet, Mr McFall’s Chamber and highly talented and sought after musician and composer, Fraser Fifield.

This event is supported by the Scottish Arts Council.

This special concert allows some of these young musicians to work and perform alongside some of their musical idols. Edey, Power and Randall are Tim Edey on guitar and melodeon, along with mouth organ superstar Brendan Power and bòdhran player Lucy Randall. They will be joined by the outstanding line up of Blazin` Fiddles player Bruce MacGregor, Anna Massie, the 2003 BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year and world renowned cellist Christine Hanson. The line up is completed with a lively set of tunes and songs from the 2008 Fèis Rois Cèilidh Trail crew.
