The Sunart Centre and Ardnamurchan High School celebrate the 10th anniversary of their opening with a special celebration on Saturday 8th September, coinciding with their BLAS 2012 concert

Ardnamurchan High School in Strontian was opened by The Highland Council in August 2002 following fifteen years of campaigning and fundraising by an army from the local community. Incorporated in the building was an array of additional features to ensure this was more than just a school, but a resource that would meet the needs and aspirations of the whole community. To emphasise local ownership of the building the community aspects were given a separate identity – Àrainn Shuaineirt, or the Sunart Centre. Eoghan Carmichael, already well known for his work in promoting events in Glenuig Hall, was appointed by the Highland Council as centre manager, and a locally elected management committee was formed to oversee the running of the centre, chaired by local councillor Michael Foxley, who for fifteen years helped lead the campaign for the new building and community facilities.Serving the whole of south west Lochaber, the Sunart Centre has become a focus for arts and culture, having promoted a wide range of events, activities and performances since its opening and supported BLAS since their inception in 2005.The Sunart Centre is now managed by a partnership of High Life Highland and the Àrainn Shuaineirt Management Committee, and works closely with Ardnamurchan High School, High Life Highland Active Schools, Libraries & Youth Development and West Highland College to create a truly community focused and managed resource. Gaelic speaking, pipe and fiddle wielding brothers from Mabou, Cape Breton, Angus, Kenneth and Calum Mackenzie were brought up steeped in the strong musical and cultural traditions of Nova Scotia.
In Strontian they are joined by this years’  resident band Kristan Harvey and The Sanna

_The Blas Commission 2012 has been awarded to renowned Gaelic singer Margaret Stewart, who has chosen to explore the theme of  ‘The Highland Wedding’, through the ages. Margaret, from a previous role as Gaelic Song Specialist for the Tobar an Dualchais project, will draw on her knowledge of the genre, and include songs and music of  love, loss and disappointment, flirtation, wooing, night-visiting, humour and dance. The concerts include the cream of Highland musicians : Iain MacFarlane (fiddle and button box), Ingrid Henderson (clarsach), Allan Henderson (fiddle and piano) and Angus Nicolson (small pipes and Highland pipes).

Iains Ceilidh is held annually in Sligachan Hotel on behalf of the Highland Hospice.   Featuring an array of  local talent who generously give their time to honour Iain and raise funds for a charity close to his heart.
 

Saturday  8th September, from 7.30pm in Seumas bar.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from the hotel.
