Effort and dedication.Two things Scottish singer/songwriter Claire Campbell has displayed almost as much  as musical talent.

Claire has been performing under what she calls her ‘shape-shifting’ creative guise Abagail Grey since 2006.

Three albums later – a new EP is imminent – and Claire has gained not only a strong following and some great reviews, but has also established a successful business.

To get to this stage Claire started out by going along to her local Business Gateway office in Inverness.

“I went to Business Gateway because I wanted to formalise the activity around the music I was making at the time. I was looking for clarity on how to make a business work and I was also looking for a small amount of start-up funding to help get things underway,” says Claire.

Claire was given a business adviser, Mark MacKintosh, who she worked closely with preparing her business plan. She also got specialist advice and one-to-one sessions with a music industry expert to help with online marketing plus some funding which enabled her to buy in PR support to promote her first album.

“I certainly could not have done any of this without the help of the Business Gateway. Their support gave me confidence, motivation and pointed me in the right direction.

“The commercial world can be a minefield and there is more to it than meets the eye. I’d encourage people to be certain it’s what they want to do as it takes loads of effort and dedication. But it’s worth it in the end.”
