“A Mass for St Michael ” Robert Carver
A revival of the ‘sumptuous ten-part Mass setting’, written around 1508, and due to be performed in the Scottish Chapel Royal to mark the triumphant return of James IV from military exploits in England in 1513. History unravelled rather differently, James IV never returned, having been
killed on Flodden Field, with most of the ‘Flowers of Scotland’,
but the mass setting remains a remarkable testimony to the
sparkling ingenuity of the Scottish monk, Robert Carver. This
performance is given in recognition of James IV’s tradition of
pilgrimage to the Shrine of St Duthuc in Tain.
Performed by: Music Fyne (Director: James Ross) and
Cappella de Angelis.
Saturday 11 September
A Guided Walk along ‘the King’s Causeway’ 11am
The road used by James IV and other pilgrims on their approach to the Shrine of St Duthuc. With musical interludes, this will be an easy walk, mostly along metalled roads, and with several stopping points, and opportunities for people to join at any point, we hope many people will join
our mini-pilgrimage.
